Sen. Andy Sanborn on bill to raise minimum wage: This War on Employers has got to stop!
This week, Republican politicians from the right (Mitt Romney) to the extreme right (Rick Santorum) joined the chorus calling for an increase in the minimum wage.
The New Hampshire GOP didn’t get the memo. Thursday, the 13 Republicans in the state Senate voted unanimously against legislation that would have established a $8.25 state minimum wage, increased it to $9.00 in 2016 and initiated annual raises based on the inflation rate.
Sen Andy Sanborn (R-Bedford), who reportedly pays the minimum wage to some of the employees at his sports bar, was the most outspoken:
How many jobs are going to exist in the state of New Hampshire if there are no more employers? How’s this body going to continue to raise taxes if there’s no employers by which to tax? How will we pay for the 160,000 government-paid, taxpayer-funded employees if there are no employers to tax to raise the money from businesses? Mr. President, it’s a discouraging day to sit here and listen to what has truly become the War on Employers. This has got to stop in this body!
