Rep. Susan DeLemus ‘broken hearted’ by husband’s guilty plea, says Feds ‘want blood’
State Rep. Susan DeLemus says she is “broken hearted” by her husband’s decision to plead guilty to federal charges resulting from a 2014 armed confrontation with federal officials near the Bundy Ranch in Nevada.
“I am broken hearted about this and I don’t blame you for being upset,” she told friends on social media. “I just hope you remember that Jerry is an honorable man and that he didn’t make this decision lightly.”
The Rochester Republican has not responded to press inquiries since news broke on Tuesday morning that her husband is the first of 19 defendants to strike a plea deal in the case.
“We are not commenting on this at this time so I can’t defend myself or Jerry to you right now,” Sue DeLemus explained. “We are keeping our cards close to the vest.”
Details of the plea agreement will not be made public until August 23 when the 61-year-old Marine Corps veteran appears before Chief U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro to change his plea. His Las Vegas attorney, Brian Smith, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that prosecutors are seeking a six year prison term.
Jerry DeLemus, a one-time alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention for the Donald Trump campaign and co-chair of the NH Veterans for Trump coalition, is charged with 11 felonies including conspiracy to impede and injure a federal officer, assault on a federal officer, obstruction of justice and interference with interstate commerce by extortion.
The Review-Journal reports prosecutors acknowledge DeLemus arrived in Nevada after the alleged assault on Bureau of Land Management agents but claim he was an “organizer of gunmen on the ground” at the ranch after the confrontation.
“The Feds are saying it doesn’t matter to them that he wasn’t there!” his wife explained. “They want blood.”
