Rep. Michael Sylvia on state marriage, Alice in Wonderland language, and gender neutral dudes
Last week, the New Hampshire House approved legislation that clarifies aspects of the state’s marital law. Senate Bill 394 recognizes out-of-state marriages, allows couples from other states that do not recognize marriage equality to marry in New Hampshire and changes the language in New Hampshire marital law to non-gender specific terms.
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) voiced strong support for the legislation, noting it “completes the promise of full equality for same-sex marriage couples that New Hampshire made in 2009 when it enacted its marriage equality law” by correcting unintended gaps in the law.
Rep. Michael Sylvia, a Republican Free Stater from Belmont, opposed the measure. “I have no problem with ‘gay’ marriage (I do object to State marriage),” he explained in a Facebook message.
“I have a problem with 'Alice in Wonderland’ language,” he continued. “What could possibly go wrong? Maybe a gender neutral dude will see the new Women’s (gender neutral) Prison as an opportunity to upgrade 'his’ accommodations?” he joked.
