Our Sunday report that state House Rep. Jane Cormier (R-Alton) has moved to Hookset and is exploring a run for the District 16 state Senate seat led some to question Cormier’s qualifications to continue holding her House seat.
The New Hampshire Constitution states that a Representative “shall cease to represent” the district “immediately” if he or she no longer lives in the district in which they were elected.
Monday, Cormier’s campaign web site, which stated she had “recently moved to Hookset” was taken down. The one-term lawmaker issued a statement saying she is moving from Alton on May 28 and will resign her House seat that day.
Cormier made light of the controversy. She told the Laconia Daily Sun that her interest in the Senate seat “apparently has Democrats and Progressives all atwitter, literally and figuratively.”
