This weekend a trio of Republican state Senate candidates were hit with allegations of impropriety that include delinquent tax payments, driving under the influence and resume padding.
Kevin Avard
Patch reports a mailer (pictured above) is hitting District 12 mailboxes that describes former state Rep. Kevin Avard as “A Candidate with Convictions” – and it’s not referring to his principles.
The mailer documents a series of incidents that include arrests for violating a domestic violence protective order and driving under the influence (with mugshot), in addition to being delinquent on child support payments, having his SUV repossessed and participating in court-ordered alcohol counseling.
Avard’s 1998 arrest for violating a domestic violence protection order requested by his then-wife has been previously reported by WMUR. The NHDP mailer documents an 2005 arrest in Franklin for driving under the influence. A DMV report confirms Avard’s driver’s license was revoked in 2005.
Avard is challenging Democratic Sen. Peggy Gilmour in District 12, which comprises Brookline, Greenville, Hollis, Mason, New Ipswich, Rindge, and Wards 1, 2, and 5 in Nashua.
Sen. Andy Sanborn
A report from Granite State Progress indicates state Sen. Andy Sanborn (R-Bedford) and his wife, state Rep. Laurie Sanborn (R-Bedford) had over 25 tax liens filed against them for unpaid property taxes over the past 20 years.
The report documents over $100,000 in delinquent taxes dating back to 1998 for commercial and residential properties in Concord and Warner. The most recent lien was filed in May 2013 for $14,534 against 67-69 Main Street in Concord, which houses the sports bar owned by Andy Sanborn.
Granite State Progress cautioned that the report is not exhaustive. We uncovered three additional tax liens filed against a property in Loudon (13 Mudgett Road) owned by Andy Sanborn. The most recent, for $2,632, was filed in April of this year.
Andy Sanborn is in a contentious rematch with Democrat Lee Nyquist for the District 9 Senate seat. Laurie Sanborn is running for re-election in the heavily Republican Hillsborough 41 district. She is also competing for House Speaker should Republicans gain control of the House.
Sen. Sam Cataldo
Yesterday, we reported that Sen. Sam Cataldo (R-Farmington) obtained his Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1995 from a notorious “degree mill” that was shut down by federal authorities after a 1996 FBI investigation.
La Salle University in Mandeville, Louisiana distributed over 40,000 mail-order degrees before its owners were arrested and convicted of mail fraud. Recipients of the bogus degrees were notified and given a chance to return the degrees for a refund.
Cataldo is in a rematch with Democrat Rich Leonard in District 6, which comprises Alton, Barnstead, Farmington, Gilmanton, New Durham and Rochester.
