Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman stumbled out of the gate when he launched his 2011 presidential campaign. “Every detail of Jon Huntsman’s long-awaited campaign launch was meticulously planned,” reported ABC News’ Sarah Kunin, “except of course for one minor detail: the misspelling of the candidate’s name.”
“John Huntsman for President,” read the press credentials distributed to reporters gathered to cover the event. A couple of months later, the campaign flooded Granite Staters’ mailboxes with a direct mail piece that also misspelled the candidate’s name. Huntsman went on to finish third in the New Hampshire primary and dropped out of the race soon after.
First District congressional candidate Shawn O’Connor can sympathize. “Stand with Sean,” read the banner on his campaign’s Facebook page. The misspelling of his first name has since been corrected.
