ICYMI: Ben Carson proposes ‘separate but equal’ bathrooms for transgender men and women
Following the defeat of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, in which opponents stoked fears that passage would lead to male sexual predators in women’s bathrooms, presidential candidate Ben Carson sat down for an interview with Fusion’s Jorge Ramos and proposed separate public bathrooms for transgender men and women. “It’s not fair for them to make everybody else uncomfortable,” he said:
Ramos: Dr. Carson, should transgender men and women use any public bathroom they choose?
Carson: How about we have a transgender bathroom?
Ramos: Would that be your solution, your proposal?
Carson: Sure. Absolutely. It is not fair for them to make everybody else uncomfortable. It’s one of the things that I don’t particularly like about the movement. I think everybody has equal rights, but I’m not sure that anybody should have extra rights, extra rights when it comes to redefining everything for everybody else and imposing your view on everybody else. The way that this country was designed, it was live and let live, and that’s the way I feel.
